Essay Assignment Three: Argumentative Researched Essay on Ethical Issues in a
College Education
Drawing on RRW Chapters 11, “Presenting Proposals”; 12, “Locating, Evaluating, and Preparing
to Use Sources”; 13, “Writing the Researched Essay”; 14, “Formal Documentation”; and 19,
“America’s Colleges: Issues and Concerns,” as well as outside sources, write an argumentative
researched essay on an ethical issue involving colleges today. In your argument, focus especially
on the following State of Texas Core Curriculum Outcomes and/or the rubrics assessing them:
 Recognize or identify the ethical issues involved and the implications of alternative actions to
resolve them.
 Examine the ethical values or decisions of others and consider their implications in a broader
social context
 Evaluate the ethical position, its assumptions, consequences, and any objections to it
 Develop, interpret, and express ideas through written, oral and visual communication
 Consider different points of view and work effectively with others to support a shared
purpose or goal
Example: Researched Argumentative Claim: Despite their apparent effort to open their gates to
a growing cadre of diverse students, colleges and universities today have paradoxically restricted
access through policies that challenge the principle of equal educational access, presenting an
ethical dilemma that demands new strategies, options, and procedures.
 The ethical issues involve a contradiction between a policy’s stated goals and its actual
implementation, and the implications of resolving the dilemma are a fundamental change in
universities’ policies.
 The ethical values suggest a way of perpetuating inequality in access to educational
 The ethical position of colleges assumes that the free market economy will balance out the
inequalities, but the objection is that this position amounts to a sleight-of-hand approach and
results in perpetuating, and even exacerbating, educational inequality.
 In written discourse, aspects of oral delivery or communication are part of persuasion and
are conveyed through punctuation—the use of dashes, commas, and periods to mimic pauses,
stops, and connections in speech; tone; voice; and in the editing process through correctness
rules; formatting; and presentation. The latter two are also part of visual rhetoric or
communication (e.g., the persuasive aspect of images, descriptive language, fonts [serif vs. sans
serif], type style [italic, bold, underline, shadow, capital letters], page layout, white space, visual
balance. As part of your argument, analyze some of the oral and visual aspects of a college or
university’s website or other digital and/or textual materials, and show how the analysis
supports (or contradicts) the ethical issues you’re exploring. Be sure to identify these explicitly
as aspects or features of oral and visual communication.
 You will work in small groups/teams to offer written and verbal feedback on essays
throughout the assignment.
Dorothy Seyler’s guidelines (299-300) regarding purpose and audience; content (especially
thesis and evidence); structure; coherence; sources (especially the use of paraphrase and
summary); and style may prove to be especially useful.
